Lot description
Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, RSA RSW, Scottish 1883-1937 - Interior; watercolour on paper, signed lower left 'F.C.B. Cadell', 23 x 15 cm Provenance: with Aitken Dott & Son, Edinburgh, no.3548 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame); Private Collection and thence by descent Note: Cadell was one of the four central members of the Scottish Colourist group, along with Samuel Peploe (1871-1935), John Duncan Fergusson (1874-1961), and Leslie Hunter (1877-1931). He was best-known for his evocative, colourful depictions of the Scottish landscape, particularly the blue seas from the coasts of Iona. Alongside these landscape views, Cadell made a vital series of interior scenes, often depicting elegant female sitters in the fashions of the day. In the present work, he removes any figures, drawing out the atmosphere of the space alone, bringing it to life through his careful dashes of colour.
