Lot description
Frank Richards alias Lord Ashburton, alias Charles F. Richards mugshot photo and booking information (Notorious Con Man). This small mounted arrest photo measures 4 x 2.5 inches (Mug Shot CDV's). VG-EX/EX condition. New York Times, 1912- BOSTON, Mass., April 28. Charles F. Richards, alias Lord Ashburton, a famous confidence man, who has served time in several prisons in this country and in England, is again under arrest on a warrant of the Newton police, who charge him with the larceny of $400. The police say that he is one of the most dangerous swindlers in the country, and that since he first became notorious, some years ago, when he traveled through the West as Lord Ashburton, he has cleaned up $1,000,000 by clever swindling. His Western trip alone yielded him some $250,000, and during it he was the guest of Mayors, county officials, bankers, and even police officials and Sheriffs. The first few years in which he made this city his headquarters he mingled with exclusive Back Bay residents. Often, it is said, when in the clutches of the police he would laugh his way out again, relying on the fear of publicity by the men and women whom he trimmed of thousands. Frequently he would disappear from this city for months, but always returned, and the police generally kept close watch on him while he was here. Although 72 years of age, Richards is well preserved. He is the son of a former prominent lumber merchant of Totnes, England. He attended Eton and later entered the Bank of England as a clerk. In China, where he served the bank, he got into difficulties which resulted in his sudden departure from that country. The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, or the conditions of aging.
