Lot description
Johnny Daniels (Florida, 1954-2009) Sailboat on Rough Seas Oil on board 24" x 36" Signed to the lower right. The frame measures 26" x 38". Johnny Daniels, the youngest of the 26 original Highwaymen, first became involved with the group by creating frames for the painters, paid 50 cents per frame. He began to paint as a young teenager, learning from observation of Alfred Hair, Livingston Roberts, and his older brother Willie Daniels. Though his life was cut tragically short by illness, Johnny Daniels left a legacy as a mentor to the 2nd Generation of Highwaymen, including Alfred Hair's son Kelvin. This single-owner Florida Highwaymen collection was thoughtfully assembled between 1998 and 2004, with works acquired from respected sources such as the A. E. Backus Gallery and Museum, Florida art dealers John Phillips and Bob Lablanc, and noted collectors Ty and Jean Tyson.
