Lot description

Lemuel "Lem" Newton (Florida, 1950-2014) Trees in the Everglades Oil on Upson board 24" x 36" Signed to the bottom right corner. The frame measures 26" x 38". Lemuel Newton was the youngest of the three Newton brothers among the Highwaymen, along with Harold and Sam. Lem began painting as a teenager, having followed his older brothers from Georgia to the Treasure Coast in Florida. Like his brothers, he employed a careful approach to his painting, emphasizing quality in a field where quantity was quite important to the bottom line. Lemuel's work is more scarce than the other Newton brothers. This single-owner Florida Highwaymen collection was thoughtfully assembled between 1998 and 2004, with works acquired from respected sources such as the A. E. Backus Gallery and Museum, Florida art dealers John Phillips and Bob Lablanc, and noted collectors Ty and Jean Tyson.
