Lot description
Livingston Roberts (Florida, 1941-2004) Moonlit Dock Oil on Upson board 24" x 36" Signed to the bottom right corner. The frame measures 27 1/4" x 39 1/2". Livingston Roberts was the first artist to join Harold Newton and Alfred Hair painting and selling Florida landscapes. Roberts began to paint as a teenager and developed by watching Bean Backus work -- it was at Backus's studio that Roberts met Hair. Revered among his peers as a mentor and inspiration, fellow Highwayman Al Black called Livingston Roberts "the best painter of all the Highwaymen, and the nicest." This single-owner Florida Highwaymen collection was thoughtfully assembled between 1998 and 2004, with works acquired from respected sources such as the A. E. Backus Gallery and Museum, Florida art dealers John Phillips and Bob Lablanc, and noted collectors Ty and Jean Tyson.
