Lot description

George Rhoads Monumental Ball Machine 1986 enameled steel, aluminum, copper, nylon rolling balls 79.5 h x 72 w x 16.5 d in (202 x 183 x 42 cm) This audio-kinetic sculpture features a chain-driven lifter that carries balls to the top of the work where gravity then allows them to travel down several tracks that loop, twist and spiral. The balls trigger motion, hit objects, strike bells, gongs, chimes, and xylophone bars, allowing each mechanism to create its own music. Once the balls reach the bottom of the sculpture, they're lifted to the top and the process continues. Welded signature and date to lower left 'Rhoads 86'. Metal fabricator's label to lower edge 'Engineered & Constructed by Parker Studios, Ithaca New York'. This work will ship from Los Angeles, California.
