Lot description

Church in the background is St. Peter's Church located in Belper, England. Belper has strong links to Rhode Island and is "twinned" with Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Samuel Slater (Slater Mills in Pawtucket) was born in Belper but moved to Pawtucket to help with the construction of mills there. He was an industrialist who is widely credited with helping create the American factory system and was a major figure in the Industrial Revolution. The little girl is probably a direct descendent of Samuel Slater. Chandler is known to have painted another portrait of Slater grandchildren in 1833. Most of Chandler's portraits were unsigned. Sight size 36" high x 28" wide. In a modern wooden frame measuring: 41" high x 33" wide. Provenance: A Newport, Rhode Island estate.
