AMBROSE MCEVOY (BRITISH 1878-1927)PORTRAIT OF A LADYInk and watercolour49 x 35cm (19¼ x 13¾ in.)Born in Wiltshire in 1877, McEvoy's talent was recognised by artist James McNeil Whistler early on, and he enrolled at the Slade School of Fine art in London at just fifteen. His early works of interiors and landscapes showed a fine technical skill, developed from Whistler's influence, but by the mid-1910s the artist turned to portraiture. After the war, McEvoy became well known for his watercolours of high-society women, with some, like this piece, characterised by a sketchy and rapid style, where his 'non-finito' attitude is certainly made clear. The delicate nature with which he captures his subjects enables them to possess an ethereal quality, the form distorted but still able to be made out. Known for capturing women with both a sense of beauty and substance, his works range from romantic to refined, yet all capture femininity in an effortless manner, for which he has been praised. In 1924 he became an associate of the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and in 1926 the Royal Watercolour Society, he exhibited works at the Grosvenor, Grafton and Leister Galleries during his lifetime.
