Lot description
Eastman Johnson (Am. 1824-1906) Young Girl Reading at a Table Oil on canvas, framed Unsigned; partial exhibition label on stretcher verso 15" x 12" actual, 24" x 20 1/2" framed Literature: Eastman Johnson Catalogue Raisonné, Hills & MacGibeny, no. 21.1.25 An excerpt from a letter authored by the Eastman Johnson Catalogue Raisonné founder and director Patricia Hills and project manager and co author Abigael MacGibney reads: "In Young Girl Reading at a Table, the subject's figure emerges from darkness, as is characteristic of Johnson. The palette is characteristic as well. The painting’s quiet mood recalls that of Johnsons other paintings of girls and women reading, and even his earlier Reading Boy, 1863 (Hills no. 20.1.15). Young Girl Reading at a Table, which we would date 1868-69 like the two Girl Reading paintings described above, could be seen as an early example of what would become in the 1870s Johnson's broader interest in depicting the interior lives of women."
