Lot description

Pine Hammock is a captivating original oil on canvas by Don D. Brown, an esteemed artist of the Indian River School whose work carries forward the rich legacy of the Florida Highwaymen. This tranquil scene captures the majesty of Florida's natural landscape, with a stand of tall, slender pines reflected in the mirror-like surface of a still marsh. The sky is filled with soft clouds drifting across a brilliant blue, creating a luminous backdrop to the layered grasslands and tree forms. The work features signs of impasto throughout, particularly in the textured strokes of the foreground grasses and the foliage, lending a sense of movement and dimension. Dan D. Brown was a pivotal figure within the Indian River School and a devoted student and colleague of Albert Backus, the renowned landscape painter who mentored many of the Florida Highwaymen. More than just an artist, Brown served as the first director of the Backus Museum, preserving and promoting the legacy of Florida's foremost naturalist painters. Brown's work resonates with collectors for its technical refinement, emotional depth, and dedication to preserving Florida's vanishing wildlands through art. A luminous and serene landscape by Don D Brown, Pine Hammock is a superb example of Indian River School artistry and a compelling continuation of the Florida Highwaymen legacy. An exceptional acquisition for collectors of Southern and Florida landscape art. Signature on lower right. Artist: Dan D. Brown (American 1947-2024) Issued: c. 1980 Dimensions: 38.50"L x 2"W x 22.25"H Country of Origin: USA
