Lot description
Nassos Daphnis (Greek 1914-2010), silkscreen on paper on canvas City Walls Print, 1974, signed verso and inscribed SS-1-71, 3/50; overall 69" x 69".Daphnis, a self-taught painter, developed a color-plane theory in the 1950s, focusing on geometric abstraction with a palette of only black, white, and primary colors, evolving into what became known as Hard-Edge painting. He placed multiple panes of solid color to create the illusion of depth, space, and movement. The prominent gallerist Leo Castelli gave him a show in 1958, from which the Museum of Modern Art purchased a painting, launching his reputation as a major figure in 20th century art. Castelli gave him sixteen additional solo shows(only Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg had more), placing his work in major collections such as the Guggenheim and the Whitney. NO in-house shipping for this lot.
