Lot description
Kevin Macpherson (American, b. 1956). "Lazy Afternoon" oil on board, n.d. Signed at lower left and titled on verso. Bathed in late light and brushed with ease, "Lazy Afternoon" captures a quiet corner of rural Americana where time seems to idle. In a palette rich with Macpherson's signature color harmonies, a truck rests in the dappled shade of summer trees, its shadow stretching across the sun-warmed ground. Behind it, a red barn peeks through thickets of green, roof catching the sky's soft reflection. Telephone lines meander across the cloud-filled blue above, threading the scene with gentle rhythm. This small plein air painting hums with immediacy - a perfect distillation of a single unhurried moment. Macpherson's brushwork is fluid and economical, laying down strokes of creamy pigment that shape form through gesture rather than detail. Size of painting: 11.6" W x 8.6" H (29.5 cm x 21.8 cm); of frame: 17.6" W x 14.75" H (44.7 cm x 37.5 cm) Every hue speaks with clarity, from the violet shadows beneath the truck to the citrus-toned light dancing across the foliage. "Lazy Afternoon" bears all the hallmarks of Macpherson's celebrated practice - his gift for translating sunlight into paint, his devotion to capturing fleeting impressions in the open air, and his instinct for elevating the everyday into something lyrical. A lifelong wanderer who has painted across thirty-five countries and counting, Macpherson continues to follow his muse with infectious joy. His work, much like this scene, invites the viewer to slow down, look closely, and see color as a universal language.
