Henri Aimé Duhem, French 1860-1941- Le Village; oil on panel, signed 'Henri Duhem' (lower left), 24 cm x 33.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Henri Duhem was descended from an old Flemish family and originally practiced as a lawyer. In 1887, his passion for drawing and watercolors led him to Paris where he enrolled in the drawing classes of Henri Harpignies (1819-1916). A companion of the Post-Impressionists, he was also an art critic, author, and friend of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), and Henri Le Sidaner (1862-1939). He was a devoted art collector, and assembled a significant collection of works by Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, and Rodin. His work gained international recognition, with exhibitions in Chicago, Prague, and Madrid, encouraged by Pissarro, who praised Duhem’s appreciation for 'simple, harmonious nature'.
