Studio of Miguel Canals, Spanish 1925-1995- Gazing out to sea, after Julian Alden Weir; coloured chalks on card, bears signature 'J. Alden Weir' (lower right), with the artist's studio stamp 'STUDIO M. CANALS' verso, 120 x 79.8 cm. Provenance: Bonhams, c.1984. Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is presumably after a composition by Alden Weir (1852-1919), a prominent American Impressionist who was a member of the Cos Cob Art Colony, and younger brother of the artist John Ferguson Weir (1841-1926). The light colour palette and loose handling of the chalk evocatively convey the bright sunlight and fresh breeze of the beach.
