George Cattermole, RWS, British 1800-1868- The Abbot; oil on canvas, 40.5 x 30.6 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Cattermole was well-known as an artist and illustrator, and produced illustrations for Sir Walter Scott's (1771-1832) 'Waverley Novels', and for his brother Richard Cattermole's (1795?-1868) 'Historical Annual'. As these titles would suggest, Cattermole had a particular interest in depicting romantic, historical scenes, with his works often featuring figures in costume.
