Lot description

Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps, French 1803-1860- A man and his dog seated by the fire; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'DECAMPS / 1840' (lower left), 35.3 x 28.1 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Decamps was a prominent painter in his lifetime, often compared to his contemporary Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), and was particularly well-known for his Orientalist scenes. The present work is executed in the dark and atmospheric colour palette which is characteristic of Decamps' work, which, along with the presence of a mysterious figure in a distinctive pointed hat, recalls similar works by the artist, including a smaller painting which sold at Drouot-Richelieu, Paris, on 27 October 2023, lot 6 (€2,816) and another which sold at Artcurial, Paris, on 13 November 2013, lot 123 (€7,534).
