Lot description
Daniel Gardner, British 1750-1805- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, with a light blue wrap and headdress; pencil, pastel and bodycolour on paper, oval, 25.6 x 20.5 cm. Provenance: Anne Eliza Dixon (Gardner's granddaughter). The Collection of Lord Carlingford, K.P. Lady Strachey Alice Stanley Countess of Coworth Park. Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is characteristic of Gardner's elegant pastel portraits, which were heavily influenced by the approach of the pre-eminent society portraitist Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), with whom he worked in the 1770s. Gardner also studied under George Romney (1734-1802) as well as Johann Zoffany (1733-1810), Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727-1785) and Benjamin West (1738-1820). A strikingly similar portrait by Gardner sold at Christie's, London, on 2 July 2019, lot 157 (£2,375).
