Henry Pelham, in 1744 married the Earl of Lincoln who became the 2nd Duke of Newcastle in 1768. She died before he acceded, so her latest title was Countess of Lincoln. Read was a successful and sought-after portraitist, whose delicate pastels were informed by her training under Maurice Quentin de la Tour (1704-1788). She worked variously in Rome and London, and established a strong following for prominent patrons including Queen Charlotte (1744-1818), for whom she produced a number of works, including a portrait of the Queen with the Prince of Wales, which was exhibited in 1763, and another of the Prince of Wales with his brother, Prince Frederick, in 1765.
