Lot description
Giacinto Calandrucci, Italian 1646-1707- The Virgin, the Magdalen, and Saint John mourning the dead Christ; red chalk, pen, and black ink on paper, bears inscription 'Carlo Marati' (lower left), and numbered '32003' (lower right), 23.7 x 36.8 cm. Provenance: Possibly Pierre Crozat (1665-1740), Paris [L.3612]. with Colnaghi, London (with their label on the back of the frame and their number 'D31256'; as Carlo Maratti). Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley). Note: Calandrucci worked in the studio of Carlo Maratta (1625-1713) and, later, under Giuseppe Passeri (1654-1714). The present work very much exhibits the fluid lines which impart Calandrucci's drawings with a palpable sense of movement, also evident in his drawing of an allegorical design which sold at Christie's, New York, on 24 January 2017, lot 48 ($8,750), and the similarly-composed drawing which sold at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 4 November 2011, lot 68 (€3,750).
