Lot description

Marmaduke Cradock, English 1660-1716- A Peacock, a turkey, and other fowl by a stream, a church among trees beyond; oil on canvas, 67.3 x 118.5 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 20 November 1992, lot 101. An Important Private Collection. Note: Cradock's bird scenes are heavily influenced by those of an earlier generation of artists such as Melchior d'Hondecoeter (c.1636-1695) and Jakob Bogdani (1658-1724). In the present work, Cradock contrasts the brightly-coloured feathers of the peacock with the more prosaic plumage of the turkey and the duck, as in his canvas which sold at Woolley & Wallis, Salisbury, on 6 September 2023, lot 294 (£9,000 hammer). Indeed, the present composition is strikingly similar to another work by Cradock which sold at Bonhams, London, on 14 September 2022, lot 46 (£17,850), with the swooping white bird to the upper right of both scenes imparting each with a palpable sense of dynamism and drama.
