Jules LELLOUCHE (Monastir 1903 - Paris 1963) Canal de la Goulette à Tunis Original oil on canvas 46 x 55 cm Signed lower right J. Lellouche Born in Monastir in 1903, Jules Lellouche was a Tunisian painter and one of the founders of the École de Tunis. After studying at the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts in Tunis, he continued his training in Paris, where he met painters such as Kikoine, Soutine and Krémègne. In 1936, he joined the Group of Four, then in 1947, the Group of Ten, which became the Tunis School. In the 50s, Lellouche spent time in Venice, where he produced a number of works. However, it was the light of Tunis that deeply inspired him, giving him a "modern impressionist" style. "Whether he paints the light of the south playing on the colored walls of poorly-seated houses or on the waters of the port, whether he paints a woman's body in the cold half-light of a studio, camels in a sun-scorched atmosphere, or prostitutes crushed by a heavy destiny, life on his canvas circulates, tender, ardent or miserable, always ennobled by the magic of line and tone alone." Pierre Boucherle on Jules Lellouche, 1944.
