Lot description
Charles Vos, Maastricht. The Netherlands, circa 1940. A hollow-cast ceramic plaque depicting the fifth Station of the Cross, showing Saint Veronica offering a cloth to wipe the face of Christ as he carries the cross to Calvary. The figures are arranged in dynamic interaction, with stylized, expressive gestures. The inscription along the base reads "V. Veronica droogt Jezus' aangezicht" ("Veronica wipes Jesus' face"). The piece is characterized by a warm ochre and brown-toned glaze and an animated surface texture. The back is roughly finished and open.
