Lot description
An original ink and watercolor on paper by James Kivetoruk Moses (Inupiaq, 1903-1982). One of his favorite themes was scenes of strange events or legends, such as this one of a mermaid sitting on the edge of an ice floe, with Eskimo hunters regarding her curiously from a distance. As art historian Kessler E. Woodward noted in his book, Painting in the North: Alaskan Art in the Anchorage Museum of History and Art (Anchorage Museum Association, 1993), "...By the time of his death in 1982, Moses was a much-celebrated artist. Painfully shy and still speaking little English, even towards the end of his life, he seldom traveled, but many admirers of his work stopped to see him in Nome. All three major museums in Alaska have substantial collections of his work, and private collectors from around the world cherish their examples..." Signed by the artist, lower left. Unframed, it measures approximately 10" x 14"; shrink-wrapped on board, it measures 12" x 16.25".
