Lot description
A stirring mixed-media scene of a bow hunter stalking caribou (or reindeer), painted on prepared seal skin as noted lower left. As early as 1937, George Ahgupuk's (Inupiaq, 1911-2001) artistic skills were recognized by no less an authority than famed artist and illustrator Rockwell Kent (American, 1882-1971). As a result, the prestigious American Artists Group in New York elected Ahgupuk a full member and shipped him pens, ink, and other drawing supplies. Ahgupuk's work has been widely shown in exhibitions throughout Alaska and the western United States as well as in New York, and his work is represented in museums within and outside the state. Signed by the artist, lower right. Matted and framed, it measures approximately 15" x 19.25" overall, with a 7.5" x 12" sight view.
