Lot description
A mixed-media village scene, painted on prepared seal skin, as noted lower left, by Alaska artist George Ahgupuk (Inupiaq, 1911-2001). When the artist ran out of paper early in his art career, he improvised by drawing and painting on bleached sealskin. The material then became his trademark, along with the use of the skins of caribou, moose, and even fish. A typical work was begun with pencil and then drawn over in ink. Some pieces, such as this one, were then tinted with paint, colored inks, or both. Signed by the artist, lower right. Matted and framed with the matted piece is a bit loose within its frame. Measures approximately 8" x 13.75" overall, with a 3.5" x 9.5" sight view.
