Lot description
Alfred Bright 1940-2009 untitled c. 1965 acrylic on canvas with collage elements 35 x 48-1/2 inches signed Bright was the first full-time Black faculty member at Youngstown State University (1970-1987), his alma mater. He also studied at Kent State University. Bright was portrayed as an 11-year old child in the 2023 film, Origin, directed by Ava DuVernay, in which he was excluded from joining his Little League teammates in a public swimming pool because of his race, a symbol of the trauma of the Jim Crow caste system in the US of the 1950s. His work is included in the collections of the Butler Institute of American Art and the Canton Museum of Art. His work was primarily abstract in nature, and he frequently incorporated collage elements into his paintings.
