Lot description
Monogrammed and dated lower right: AvW 1877 The sheet is a study for the six-part fresco cycle ‘Roman Life’, which Anton von Werner created for the Café Bauer in the early 1880s. This was located on the boulevard Unter den Linden on the corner of Friedrichstraße. It was Berlin's first Viennese-style coffee house, with around 800 newspapers laid out for guests every day. The frescoes are probably among the most beautiful works of the Berlin painter and among the few that do not depict a historical event.
