Lot description

Magnificent arrangement of flowers in a basket on a marble bracket in a garden. Born in Vienna Joseph Nigg (1782 - 1863) was the most famous flower painter at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory under Emperor Franz II. He was hired by the manufactory in 1800 after or during his studies at the academy, and he worked there until 1843. He was in charge of flower painting as of 1816, and from 1835 onwards he taught flower painting in the manufactory's academy. Apart from his own floral compositions, he also created copies based on Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch.
