Tranquillo Cremona, Pavia 1837 - Milano 1878 (Pavia 1837 - Milan 1878) - Tranquillo Cremona was born in Pavia on April 10, 1837, into a family of Jewish descent. Orphaned at a young age, he took up art studies by attending the Civica scuola di pittura in Pavia, where he was a student of Giacomo Trecourt. In 1852 he moved to Venice to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti, where he was influenced by 15th- and 16th-century Venetian painting, particularly the dissolution of the outline line typical of the last Titian .In 1859 he moved to Milan to attend the Accademia di Brera, where he was oriented toward history painting under Hayez. During this period he came into contact with the milieu of the Milanese Scapigliatura, a cultural movement that included artists, poets and musicians with nonconformist and anti-academic tendencies .Cremona's style was characterized by the use of soft, nuanced brushstrokes, influenced by Venetian painting and the search for atmospheric effects. His best-known works include "The Kiss" (1870), "Ivy" (1878) and "Melody" (1874), all characterized by a sensitive rendering of emotions and research into light and atmosphere .Tranquillo Cremona died in Milan on June 10, 1878 at the age of 41, probably from lead poisoning, a substance contained in the pigments he used.
