Jean Welz, Austrian/South African 1900-1975 - Pregnant Nude, 1945; oil on board, signed and dated upper left 'Jean Welz 1945', 37.3 x 27.6 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Pieter Wenning Gallery, London (according to the label attached to the reverse); private collection Note: born in Austria, the artist emigrated to South African in the 1930s, where he would begin to exhibit in the 1940s. He was part of an important exhibition of South African art at the Tate in London in 1948, as well as the 'Van Riebeeck Tercentenary Exhibition' at the Venice Biennale in 1952 and the São Paulo Biennale in 1957.
