REX WHISTLER (1904-1944) : A PAIR OF POSTERS, LONDON MUSEUM / TATE GALLERY C. 1928 original colour lithographs, in later frames, inscribed 1716 / 25.10.28 / 1500 / HAYCOCK PHOTOCHROM, together with a letter dated 1973, the posters 102cm x 63cm (2) Provenance: The collection of Canon David Hutt. Purchased from Godfrey Caravan in 1973 for £10. Sold with a letter from Mr Caravan to David Hutt agreeing the price, dated June 26 1973. He states ' You will certainly be pleased with the posters. They have been well preserved and are virtually in new condition. I do not know if you saw the Rex Whistler exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum a few years ago, but the examples there were a very tatty pair' The poster advertising London's Tate Gallery, was published by the Underground Electric Railways Company in 1928. The painting is by Rex Whistler, who had completed a mural, 'Epicurania' for the Tate Gallery restaurant earlier that year. For the poster, Whistler took distinctive elements from the mural and wove them into a new composition. His 18th- century pastiche includes two women taking tea, they have been added to the foreground to appear as though they are in the Tate restaurant itself. The London Muesum poster was also designed in 1928 and advertises how to reach the London Museum by public transport, including opening times and prices for the museum. The poster depicts Britannia arriving in a carriage pulled by a pink-maned unicorn, greeted by a policeman, a cherub holding a London Museum guide, and a dog. Several statues, including Nelson on top of his column in the background of the poster, acknowledge her presence by bowing and doffing their hats. The London Museum was opened in 1912 and was originally housed in Kensington Palace.
