(Annaberg/Salzburg 1930–2022 Vienna) Wiener Prater um 1900, signed and dated Kumpf 65, oil on board, 81 x 100 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Vienna Full-page color illustration (across two pages): Der Maler Kumpf / Mit Texten von Alfred Komarek, Europa Verlag, 1987, p. 102–103 Gottfried Kumpf, Ölbilder - Graphiken - Skulpturen, Galerie Edition E. Hilger, Vienna Color Illustration: Gottfried Kumpf, Maler und Bildhauer, Amalthea Signum Verlag, 2008, p. 279 The Prater - how can one express it - is quite inexpressible. It is common, coarse, and blatant - and not the least bit “cultured”. Its business sense is fabulous and its romance has the ring of cash. In the Prater, nothing is ever as present as dreaming of the past, and nothing as negotiable as the priceless. An artist, taking on the Prater, should love it, but not chastely; should explore it, but with insatiable curiosity, paying no heed to the difference between cotton candy and dill pickles. Alfred Komarek
