Lot description
Paul Manship (American, 1885-1966). "Mother and Child" - 1917, bronze with brown patina and parcel gilding, signed "P. Manship" in mold to top of base and "ROMAN BRONZE WORKS N-Y-" foundry to back side of base, Christie's label to the underside. On Porto Nero marble base. Note: The Christie's Lot Essay notes that a letter from Paul Manship, dated November 30, 1961, originally accompanied this sculpture. Manship states, "I think your statuette made by me was a study of a group made for the decoration of a fountain in the Estate of Chas M. Schwab and must date from 1917. There may be no other copies of this sculpture - I have not seen it for years." Ultimately Schwab's summer estate, Immergrun, would be home to 12 works by Manship and when the house was sold in 1942 ten of them were sold at auction. The fountain figure is now in the collection of Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC. Literature: Edwin Murtha, "Paul Manship, New York, 1957, p. 152, no. 60.
