BIOGRAPHY: William Charles Thomas Dobson was born in Hamburg in 1817 as the son of English parents. In 1826 he moved back to London, where he attended the Royal Academy under Charles Lock Eastlake from 1836, who eventually helped him gain a position at the newly founded School of Design. This was followed by study trips to Italy and Germany, where he was especially impressed by the art of the Nazarenes. In 1860 he returned to England and became an official member of the Royal Academy in 1872 and further joined the Society of British Artists.
