Lot description
FERNANDO ALVAREZ DE SOTOMAYOR El Ferrol 1875 - Madrid 1960 Portrait of a Lady in a Goyaesque Dress. 1899 Oil on canvas Signed and dated Measurements 61.8 x 51.3 cm This is a work from Álvarez de Sotomayor’s youth, created before he obtained his pension in Rome when he left the studio of his first teacher Manuel Domínguez Sánchez. The model is reminiscent of the girl in the painting “Rapaza con gato” (No. 2 in the catalogue raisonné), which is located in the studio that the painter and his friend Eduardo Urquiola opened in 1898 at 6 Espoz y Mina Street in Madrid, where he would receive commissions of this kind. We thank Mrs. Natalia Fraguas Fernández, co-author of the Fernando A. de Sotomayor catalogue, for her help in cataloging this work.
