Abdelaziz GORGI and Zoubeir TURKI Dr Sleim Ammar. In memory of Arab medicine, some of its great names. Prefaced by Dr Sadok Mokaddem (President of the National Assembly) and Mr Fathi Zouhir (Secretary of State for Public Health). Imprimerie Bascone & Muscat, Tunis, 1965. Illustrated with 35 engravings including 19 hors-texts by Abdelaziz Gorgi and Zoubeir Turki. Edition of 2250 copies, without proof. The fruit of "patiently gathered documentation", this history of Arab medicine, particularly in Ifriqiya, highlights the progress made by Arab-Muslim civilization in the sciences, and specifically medicine, during its golden age, making it the heir to ancient civilizations and the precursor of the Renaissance through "the route taken by Tunisian medical works to Italy and France [...]". The illustrators Gorgi and Turki, two eminent members of the Tunis School, brought this medicine to life through their depictions of medicine and the Maghrebian doctor during this golden age, themes little touched on in Tunisian painting. Sleim Ammar (1927-1999), Tunisian psychiatrist and historian. Pioneer of psychiatry in Tunisia.
