Lot description

Angustia signed and dated 1977 (lower right) charcoal and pastel on paper 21 1/2” x 14 3/4” (55 cm x 37 cm) Provenance ABC Galleries Angustia, a Spanish word that translates to “anxiety” in English, is the focal point of this 1977 portrait of a woman by Alfredo Roces. An artist, sculptor, writer, and columnist, he powerfully demonstrates his versatile artistry in this piece. His ingenious utilization of materials — brown/kraft paper as the base and his figure’s skin color, charcoal to outline and add shadows on her face, and white pastel for the highlight — manage to exude a strong sense of emotional expression. With her head slightly turned to the side, a visible frown on her face, and eyes filled with anticipation, her anxiety is unmistakable. (Jessica Magno)
