Portrait of a Man signed, dated 1978 and inscribed Manila (lower left) oil on canvas 22” x 17 1/2” (56 cm x 44 cm) A protégé of National Artist Fernando Amorsolo, it is a given that Ben Alano would also excel in old-school realism. He was able to capture Amorsolo’s warm sunlight, as evidenced by this 1978 Portrait of a Man. In this portrait, Alano manages to make the Filipino’s sun-kissed skin shine as the sunlight dances across this old man’s face. The cigarette he pressed against his lips exudes a faint trail of smoke. Through this portrait, Alano tells a compelling story as he portrays the tale of the famed Filipino resiliency and the lives that the ordinary Filipino leads. (Hannah Valiente)
