Nude signed and dated 1971 (lower left) mixed media 16” x 23 1/4” (41 cm x 59 cm) Alfredo Roces’s year at the Arts Students League in New York bore great results. First going to the ASL to strengthen his basic drawing skills, Roces eventually learned to improve his work under the tutelage of Dada painter George Grosz. This blossoming of his talents was evident in this 1971 Nude. In vibrant colors and lines that liberally overlap with each other, the woman in Roces’s Nude is relaxed as she leans back on her arms and looks over her shoulder. There is a sense of intimacy in this piece – even though the woman’s face cannot be seen, her body expresses her comfort, and her trust in her companion is evident through the relaxed lines of her body.
