Untitled signed and dated 1976 (lower right) mixed media on paper 25” x 18” (64 cm x 46 cm) Through his art, Edsel Moscoso exalts the Filipino rural community. An Antiqueño and a Filipino, Moscoso’s works portray the simplicity of the rural environment as it nestles at the heart of provincial life. “[They] tell no story – except that eternal story of born, live, love, work, suffer and die,” writes National Artist Nick Joaquin in his Manila Standard column, “but they do make a point of retelling that story as the story of how the Filipino is born, lives, loves, works, suffers, and dies.” These 1976 works portray the two different lives people lived in the countryside. In two works, Moscoso depicts both the rich and the poor, as evidenced by the state of their clothes. Like many artists before him, Moscoso pays tribute to the countryside, a constant source of inspiration for the eminent artist. (Hannah Valiente)
