Bagong Buhay signed, dated 9-15-1975 and inscribed San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan (lower right) watercolor on paper 10” x 14” (25 cm x 36 cm) Born in Calabanga, Camarines Sur, Edgar Doctor showed interest in the arts at a young age, making his own toys, drawing, and collages. Painted in 1975, Bagong Buhay shows Doctor’s mastery in watercolor, depicting a serene landscape as if being observed from afar: houses surrounded by lush greenery, backgrounded by a magnificent mountain range, and placed under a clear sky. The artist skillfully utilized a wet-on-wet technique in this piece, dipping a wet brush on the colors and applying it on the damp surface of the paper, creating blotches of paint that blend with one another. This technique resulted in a bleary image that evokes a peaceful and restful mood, as if someone just opened their eyes after a long, deep sleep. (Jessica Magno)
