Heading: Author: [Original Art] Daniel Clowes Title: Original Art * DANIEL CLOWES * Dan Pussey and Gummo Bubbleman Pen and Ink Drawing * EIGHTBALL No. 3, Page 21 Place Published: Publisher: Date Published: 1990 Description: Original Dan Clowes comic art page from Eightball #3, page 21 ("The Young Manhood of Dan Pussey"), pen and ink on art paper, with Zip-a-Tone shading. Inscribed in the top left margin ("To Bob.. Best, Daniel G. Clowes 2002 A.D."). Image area approx. 10½x16" (on paper measuring 12x18"). Excellent condition, matted, mounting tape to verso. Dan Pussey, superhero comics artist supreme, gets schooled by Art Spiegelman stand-in Gummo Bubbleman: "Don't you get it, man? You're ARTISTS! You gotta SUFFER! S-U-F-F-E-R!" In our opinion, the story this page comes from, "The Young Manhood of Dan Pussey," is one of the best stories of the 1990s. The first time PBA's Director of Comics met Dan Clowes, back in the late '90s, he asked Dan how Spiegelman handled being lampooned in this story. Dan told our Director of Comics about his first meeting with Spiegelman, in which Spieg offered highly specific remarks about pretty much Dan's entire oeuvre, while omitting all mention of "The Young Manhood of Dan Pussey." Dan was hopeful that Spieg somehow missed out on seeing this scathing story. Soon after, Spieg sent a boxed set of Maus to Dan. When Dan opened the set, he saw that it was signed on the title page... by "Gummo Bubbleman." Yikes! ************************ Coming Soon: The DC Universe Collection Part 5: Silver, Gold and Bronze.
