Lot description

Pompeo Massani,  Italian 1850-1920-  Teatime; oil on canvas, signed 'P Massani' (upper left), 51.2 x 38.4 cm.  Note:  The present work charactetistic of those by Massani, who studied in Florence under the portraitist Michele Gordigiani (1835-1909). Massani was a prolific painter of genre scenes, often depicting figures in historical dress either in elaborate or (as in the present case) slightly more rustic interiors, which he depicted with great care, as evident in the charming little sketch of a head which Massani has painted on the wall to the upper right of the composition. The artist produced a number of similar compositions, including, for example, a slightly smaller painting of an elderly couple which sold at Bonhams, London, on 13 March 2019 (lot 5) for £1,500.
