Lot description

Samuel Andrews (1767 England- 1807 Patna, India)- Portrait miniature of an East India Company officer, Madras, India. Signed S Andrews & dated 1796, in gilt metal case. H 3 in. W 2-1/2 in. Samuel Andrews began his career as a miniaturist in England, before moving to Madras, India in 1791. By 1795, he was living in the same house previously occupied by the renowned British miniaturist, John Smart. They possibly lived together or shared a studio, but regardless, Smart was of great influence to Andrews and the two men must have shared client commissions, as so many of their works relate to each other. It also appears that they painted miniature portraits of each other. Andrews later moved to Calcutta, where he painted some of his most celebrated distinctive profiles en grisaille. Condition: Repair to metal case, otherwise no damage noted.
