Norberto Carating (b. 1948) Untitled signed and dated 2004 (lower right) each oil on canvas 20" x 16" (51 cm x 41 cm) each Norberto Carating’s harrowing childhood greatly affected his personality—timid and reserved. Since then, painting has been his outlet of expression, and his canvases, paints, and brushes have been silent witnesses to his innermost thoughts and emotions. Carating’s oeuvre is distinguished by its metallic colors and hard-edge geometric shapes. His unique artistry created a body of works with thin layers of vibrant-colored paint over dark ones, or vice versa, allowing the colors underneath to peek through. Another characteristic of his works is his application of paint as if furrowed by a fine toothcomb. However, there is an underlying melancholia behind his vibrant and elegant-looking canvases, a stark contrast to the outward beauty of his art. “Those colors and strokes mask my depression,” Carating confesses. Yet, Carating’s compositions, on the positive side, still exude a sense of comfort and reassurance. Depending on his chosen palette, his pieces can evoke a profound sense of calm, hope, or fervor, deeply resonating with the viewers.
