BIOGRAPHY: George Van Hook was born in Abington, Pennsylvania in 1954. He attended Oberlin College for a year and then dropped out to travel and paint on an extended cross-country tour. He re-entered college in Humboldt State University, where he graduated with a B.A. in Art in 1977. He established a strong reputation as an emerging young West Coast artist from 1976 to 1984, winning during this period over a dozen awards and prizes in California and Oregon. In 1985, he moved back to the eastern part of the country, where he has resided since with his wife Sue. Van Hook's still lifes exhibit extraordinary vibrant colors kept in a tense but stable balance. To this, he adds a sense of composition that keeps the viewer's eye moving over the surface of his paintings, a seemingly simple but complex problem which only the best still life artists solve. Van Hook's solution is to keep our attention moving in cognitive pulses into and out of the ostensible central subject matter by superimposing it on highly complex and interesting background. His landscapes are more immediate, less formalized, expressions of the visual and emotional world he experiences and transmits to us. These paintings capture an urgency of desire for the sensual beauty and perceived spirituality of the natural world. Here, the interplay of suffused light with a strong compositional discipline gives these gem-like paintings remarkable power. Van Hook has been represented by galleries in Massachusetts, Maine, California, New Jersey, Washington, and New York; and has been exhibited widely in this country as well as two exhibitions in France.
