Huis met Brug (c. 1925) Signed lower left Oil on canvas, 40.1 x 30.4 cm Provenance: - Galerie Mokum, Amsterdam - Private collection, the Netherlands, thence by descent Literature: W.A. Braasem, Naïeve schilders zien ons land, Ploegsma, Amsterdam, 1978, p. 134 Exhibited: Singer Memorial Foundation, Laren, Naïeve schilders zien ons land, 31 August - 1 October 1978, no. 15 (as Huis met brug) Note: Sal Meijer’s picturesque cityscapes oftentimes captured historic landmarks of cities in the Netherlands and Flanders. His works reflect his fascination with simple yet captivating details. The present painting of the Bonifacius Bridge in front of the “Gruuthuus” in Bruges is a charming example of this practice. The portraits Meijer painted of these cities were, as far as can be determined, not created in connection with any particular event. Often, his views were presumably chosen purely for their picturesque quality, and it is not entirely unthinkable that Meijer’s selection was influenced by whether or not a postcard of the location was available. * Condition report available upon request
