Lot description

Title: 'The Marketplace at Nazareth' Antique Photogravure/Etching after the painting by Edwin Longsden Long, that hasn't been seen at auction since 2001. Printed by Goupil & Co (active 1855-1889) Both Long's work and even Photogravures by Goupil & Co both reside in "The National Portrait Gallery" (London) Few etchings or examples are in circulation and this large format high quality antique etching measuring approx. 20.5" x 30" (copper plate size) and is Professionally framed behind glass in a Silver Gilt frame that measures 29.5" x 38" The work features the visage of perhaps his most famous muse, an eastern girl that appears in other works such as Ester, the Egyptian and Thisbe. The composition brings forward two ladies sitting in the Nazareth Market, one in white, the other in black. Both appear to have multiple vessels 'for sale' and both gently stare back at the viewer while they are split by a young boy holding a bowl of milk feeding a kitten behind stacks of pages that form a V-shape in the negative space reminiscent to the 'unseen' chalice in di Vinci's 'the last supper.'
