Lot description

A mixed-media artwork by Detroit artist Tyree Guyton composed with an American flag, Box Spring, and a robe. Typical of Guyton's style, this artwork consists of re-purposed materials that have been re-imagined and arranged to engage with the contemporary issues of Detroit culture and economy. From, "The American Show," series. Guyton writes, "This is the newest body of work in, "The American Show," series that I call, "Under Cover." I became fascinated by the art of Jim Dine's house coat series and Jasper John's use of the American flag and I decided to blend these two concepts adding a new spin with the use of the bedspring. The imperfections and deformities in this work are part of my creative process. I create outdoors and purposely allow the elements to add a certain magic to my work. Life is not perfect - perfection is merely perception." Signed and dated 2009 in the lower right. Framed H. 81.5" W. 27.5".
