Lot description
MARY, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (1897-1965). [WILDING, Dorothy]: A signed vintage portrait photograph of Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, in uniform during the Second World War. A gelatin silver photograph (image size 140 × 110 mm), mounted on card behind glass in a contemporary brown leather frame by Jarrolds of Knightsbridge (easel-backed, external dimensions 202 × 150 mm, bordered in gilt). Mount a little tanned; frame slightly rubbed; overall in excellent condition, with the photograph itself in fine condition. The bottom margin of the mount is signed 'Mary. / 1943'. The Princess Royal's uniform appears to be that of a marshal, likely a styling relating to her roles as Controller Commandant of the Auxiliary Territorial Service or Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. This is one of several wartime portraits of the Princess by Dorothy Wilding. The National Portrait Gallery assigns a date of 1940 to two similar portraits (NPG x35667 and NPG x35665).
